    Training Areas

(Foundations of design, Ideation and creativity, Product and user, Sustainable thinking, Product design culture, Product design projects)

This block introduces students to the creative process and project planning in a cross-cutting manner by presenting the conceptual fundamentals of product design and project methodology.

Through group, flexible and participative dynamics, experimentation and research, students are introduced to sustainable and systemic thinking, while culture, sociology and art are discussed.

Students will be trained in different research methodologies with the aim of acquiring a strategic, user-centred vision that allows them to collect, analyse, synthesise and manage real information in order to detect the best possibility for innovation and user experience that they can propose to a client. The aim is to understand users, their context and needs, in order to apply this to the project.

Students will learn about the scope of product design. They will realise that everything around them is designed, and that the product designer is the person who proposes how we will live, what devices will exist and how we will use them, how we will move, how we will think and what needs the human body will have, how we will have fun, what the furniture and objects around us will be like, what the accessories will be like, etc. To do this, students will visualise scenarios and they will learn to propose solutions and designs that take into account the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants.

Different design and ideation challenges will be developed as an introduction to the design process, together with two product design projects, which we will be able to bring to life in the IED Madrid Fab Lab.

(Ergonomics, Materials and Production Systems, Finishes, Interaction)

Block introducing students to the technical concepts of product design, such as ergonomics, families of materials and how to process them, the final finishes of a product, etc. through experiential laboratories.
Students will gain essential specific knowledge through practice and applied research. They will therefore learn how to tackle the different technical issues that may arise in any product design project, whether it is for furniture, decorative objects, electronic devices, accessories etc.

(Drawing, Colour, Volume, Prototypes, Fab Lab)

In this learning block, students are introduced to the different manual processes used by designers.
This means that they will acquire the ability to observe in order to represent an object through different plastic and expressive techniques. The manual tools of a product designer are the various techniques for expression and communication, such as drawing, colour and prototyping. We will learn to express what our mind thinks with our hands in order to make it visible through black-and-white sketch, markers and colour, or a prototype, which we will build in the FabLab, our workshop, with basic tools such as woodturning, thermoforming, laser cutting and 3D printing.
Students will develop their own expressive sensitivity, a symbol of a designer’s identity, and will understand the importance of visual communication.

(Illustrator, Photoshop, Rhinoceros, Photography and video)

The design process contains a thinking stage, a building stage and a final communication stage: we talk about think-build-communicate. The best idea can come to nothing if we are not able to develop it technically. And the best developed project may not convince the client if it does not go hand in hand with appealing strategic communication.
In this learning block, students acquire the digital tools offered by technology for product design so as to be able to apply them to the development and communication stages of the design project.
They will learn to represent the imagined objects, to model them in 3D, to create photo-realistic images, to understand the importance of creative management and to narrate their project as the best possible story.

Society is at a time at which many products fulfil their functionality and satisfy our day-to-day physical needs, but it is time to ask ourselves whether they also improve our lives on other levels. A product designer challenges this question and conventional thinking and designs products, services and user experiences that surprise and that improve people’s lives.

The intensive one-year Product Design Course is designed to provide students with basic training as product designers. This is achieved through an educational programme that combines the tools needed to undertake a project.

Students will come into contact with technical and technological tools that will help them to understand the operational processes and vocabulary of product design.
This intensive course offers students the opportunity to develop their own ideas and innovative concepts through the subjects studied during the course.
